“I had no idea so much help was available. The SBDC Counselor, Jo helped me think of things I had never considered before. I couldn’t have made it as far as I did without her.”

Secret to Success:

“A key to success is having the right vision and helping others understand and buy into it.”
Crystal Hoppie
Therapeutix Mind & Body Inc. of Ogden, Utah provides expert massage therapy with a specialty in relieving chronic pain, relaxation, and skin and body treatments. The company employs statelicensed massage therapists and a master esthetician to help clients look and feel their best. The company integrates both western and eastern treatments that are designed to help eliminate stress and maximize balance and comfort in the body, mind, and soul.

Crystal Hoppie, owner of Therapeutix Mind & Body, purchased the company in March 2012. She has had a particular interest in the wellness industry ever since her son was diagnosed with both leukemia and testicular lymphoma at three years of age. In college she studied to become an oncologist.

After purchasing Therapeutix Mind & Body, Crystal quickly realized the magnitude of being responsible for her own company. Despite the common challenges every business owner encounters, Crystal said there’s more than just one secret to success. “There is so much; I wouldn’t say it’s all up to me. There have been so many people responsible for my success, including my husband, family, community, staff, etc. Without all of them, I wouldn’t be successful.”

To assist her in her efforts for success, Crystal met with Ogden City to discuss relocation and funding options. She was referred to Jo McNurlan with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Jo provided guidance on how to restructure her business for growth and write a business plan. Crystal said she “walked out like a whooped puppy.” Their impactful meeting was an eye opener, but she admits, it was very helpful in the growth of her company. She doubled revenues in her first year of ownership, and then doubled it again after relocating to Ogden in October 2013.

Reflecting on her experience, Crystal said the best part of business ownership is the fact that her “dream” still exists. She said it takes vision and a lot of hard work. Her advice to other small businesses is to “Look for resources available to you. Be proactive and find them. There is so much. It can get overwhelming with all that has to be done. Ogden city and the SBDC have been huge with the resources they provide.”

Crystal said the most rewarding aspect of business ownership is seeing people make changes and live healthier lifestyles. She is grateful to show her children first-hand they can live their dreams and overcome any obstacle that stands in their way.
