MCM Engineering-II is a medium sized company that specializes in custom and highly engineered voltage electrical distribution equipment for utilities, airports, industrial customers, mines, solar and many other industries. Owner, Lowell Klassen believes that his company has succeeded because they offer high quality services and technology in leading edge products. He states, “If it has electrons moving through it, we are talented enough to create and build products that meet our customer’s needs.”
Klassen never regretted moving his company from California ten years ago. Utah not only offered him a better business environment but also great resources and a solid workforce. He considers it a bonus to be able to live and operate his business in such a beautiful state where the scenery is outstanding and the lifestyle is great.
Craig Isom, Director of the Cedar City Small Business Development Center (SBDC), was referred to Klassen through a Business Expansion and Retention (BEAR) visit. The BEAR program in the state of Utah is focused on meeting with existing businesses to determine any needs, then referring them to available local resources. Isom took a tour of the facility and together he and Klassen determined that MCM Engineering–II, would be an ideal candidate for an Economic Gardening project.
Economic Gardening (EG) is specifically designed to help growing companies make better decisions by focusing on strategic issues, such as refining business models, or developing new markets and sales channels. The EG program provides the company with access to a team of highly skilled research specialists that gather strategic information specific to the company’s industry and local competitive environment. As an EG team leader, Isom has met several times with Klassen to discuss market expansion, search engine optimization and social media marketing.
MCM Engineering-II is forecasting a 20% sales growth in the coming year and has grown from 10 employees at startup to 34 currently. Klassen’s advice to entrepreneurs is to think long term in planning and always remain positive. He plans to continue to utilize the resources available through the SBDC. “The SBDC helped us investigate our markets, better utilize the internet and social media, provided government contracting assistance, and assisted us to gain more exposure into other markets with stronger communication tools.”
