Secret to Success:
Mother and daughter team–LeAnn Talbot and Chantel Gadie began their pursuit to start a business together in 2010, a dream that they had held for several years. After visiting numerous boutiques in Utah and throughout the U.S., Talbot and Gadie found a love of fashion, design and décor that called out to them. The mother-daughter duo decided they wanted to open their own boutique and came up with the name Ba’Zei, an adjective they coined to describe something that is “crazy fun, crazy beautiful and crazy in love.”
Once the business idea was established, Talbot and Gadie contacted the Weber State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for assistance in putting together a business plan. The plan helped Talbot and Gadie launch the boutique successfully and has helped the business to stay on track. The SBDC provided Talbot and Gadie assistance with many start-up details that may have otherwise been overlooked. “With the help of the SBDC, we were able to see the big picture and everything that is associated with running a successful business. There’s so much more to a business than what you realize,” said Talbot.
One of the biggest challenges that Talbot and Gadie faced was finding capital assistance from a bank to fund the purchase of a facility for the store. Talbot and Gadie worked with the SBDC to navigate through the complicated application process and with patience, perseverance and the right documentation–the duo secured financing with America First Credit Union.
The boutique is now a full service shop in Roy that carries woman and junior fashions, select menswear, infant and toddler wear, gifts, seasonal items and will soon be offering drapery and decorating services.
The owners of Ba’Zei have placed an emphasis on being involved in the community. Talbot and Gadie have participated in many charity fundraisers, benefits, pageants, and school fundraisers in the business’s short existence. Ba’Zei’s newsletters also feature a listing of community activities and events.
Talbot and Gadie believe that there are several important factors that people should know before launching a small business. The duo recommends that individuals have experience in the industry they wish to pursue, that they do their homework, study the market and take time to examine what types of products customers may be looking for. “If you purchase what you love or couldn’t live without, chances are your customers will feel the same way. You want to make sure to do a quality job and sell quality materials. Anything less won’t get you too far,” said Talbot.
