Montica Cox was selling scrapbooking supplies from her home for ten years before opening a store and expanding her business.   Cox had always dreamed of opening her own scrapbooking store and in early 2011 discovered an opportunity to pursue her dream when a building in Castle Dale, Utah became available.

“I contacted the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the very beginning. They answered all of my questions and helped alleviate my concerns. The advisors also brought a few things to my attention that I had overlooked,” said Cox.  In addition to the counseling Cox received at the SBDC, she was referred to the Emery County Economic Developer–to address planning and zoning issues with the location.

Initially, Cox assumed she would be able to run her business while also maintaining her role as a mother.  Upon opening Moments 2 Cherish in May of 2011, Cox quickly learned that the business was more demanding of her time and attention than she had originally anticipated. Thanks to the support and encouragement from her family, Cox was able to work through the growing pains of small business ownership, while also maintaining her role as mother as her primary focus.

Cox advises other people with an interest to start a business to follow their dreams.  In addition, Cox recommends that prospective business owners contact the SBDC for guidance and mentoring before starting a new venture.   “There are things that you don’t think about and it is nice to have someone there to help you,” Cox said.

Moments 2 Cherish has grown since it opened in May of 2011 by offering a wider variety of supplies and products including: an assortment of figurines, jewelry, custom-made bags and wallets. The most enjoyable part of business ownership for Cox is the freedom it gives her to choose products and supplies that are new and unique to the industry.

As a small business owner, Cox is passionate about giving back to the community. On the second Thursday of every month Moments 2 Cherish is open to the public from 6-9pm for “Crop Night,” a free event for people to scrapbook together, learn techniques and layouts, and share ideas.   “I enjoy helping others unlock their own creativity,” Cox said.

The Price SBDC congratulates Montica Cox on the successful launch of Moments 2 Cherish.  Cox’s passion, hard work and determination are an inspiration to many people in Emery County who have a dream to become a small business owner.
