The St. George Small Business Development Center (SBDC) serves Washington and Kane counties in Southern Utah, with offices in both Dixie and Kanab. St. George is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. The SBDC offers a broad range of services to assist small business owners in entrepreneurial education, advocacy, and business development.
Southern Utah is characterized by is warm temperate climate, rural and urban communities, substantial metropolitan growth, and numerous National Parks and recreation areas that attract visitors from across the country. Some of the most spectacular parks in the nation are located in Southern Utah, including Zion National Park, Arches and Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, attracting nearly 5 million visitors annually (5.7 million in 2010).
Southern Utah has large segments of jobs in the areas of leisure/hospitality, construction, education/health, government, and transportation. Since the recession, many of these segments have been hit hard. The unemployment rate in Southern Utah is currently higher than the Utah State average (8.7% vs. 7%). The St. George Small Business Development Center plays a pivotal role in the economic recovery of the region, assisting businesses with strategies to survive and grow, and providing entrepreneurs with vital resources to start a business.
To facilitate small business owner success, and contribute to the economic sustainability of the region, SBDC counselors provide consulting services to assist entrepreneurs, managers and business owners with business planning, marketing, research, financial statement analysis, cash flow analysis, financial projections and other management needs. The SBDC works closely with educational, governmental, and civic organizations in Washington and Cane counties to outreach to potential clients that have been devastated by the recession. It is the SBDC’s mission to help individuals receive the skills and training required to own business or find employment in a field that will withstand the winds of change.
